Greenhouse Irrigation and Conservation

Use your water wisely

Plants require a lot of water to grow—in fact, 70% of the world's fresh water is used for crop irrigation.

However, less than 3% of water on Earth is safe for humans to use, and 40% of the population already faces a shortage of water accessibility.

That’s why irrigation and conservation go hand-in-hand. Making sure growers use their water effectively is not only good for the environment, but it's also good for their pockets. After all, if you use less water, you spend less on heating and treating it

Growers can conserve water through:

The method of irrigation:

  • Drip irrigation precisely delivers the water to the soil above the root zone. This method ensures that the water does not land on the leaves of the plants, which can cause water waste and certain diseases.
  • Subsurface drip irrigation irrigates the root zone of the plants underneath the soil’s surface. Water is delivered directly to the roots.

Making sure every drop is used:

Greenhouse growers are already ahead:

Studies show that greenhouse cultivation is the most water-efficient way to grow food. Since greenhouses are typically closed structures, less water is lost to the atmosphere than outdoor crops. Additionally, because greenhouses are more humid than the outside environment, the crops have a higher rate of transpiration efficiency than plants grown outdoors.

The most efficient greenhouses that use water to the fullest advantage are ones with extensive climate controls. Operations that include sensors, humidity and CO2 control, and drip irrigation can control where and how every drop of water is used. Total control over your water is a great way to aid in conservation efforts and save money.
